Youtube employee Christopher Cukor has had to issue an apology after calling 911 on a black man waiting inside his building.
The incident, which took place on the Fourth of July, shows Cukor asking the black man, Wesly Michel, to either step out of the San Francisco building or call the person who ‘invited him there.’
Michel recorded the interaction, which has been viewed millions of times.
As Cukor calls the police, his young son can be seen begging him to just walk away asking his day to “don’t, don’t, don’t” call authorities.
The Youtube employee later wrote an apology to Michel on Medium, citing 'tragic family history' for his want to call 911.
He writes that his father was killed in Berkeley back in 2012 when he confronted a man outside his home.
From The Daily Beast:
'For my child's safety, my safety and that of the building, I felt it was necessary to get help in this situation,' Cukor wrote. 'Furthermore, I've encountered trespassers in my building and we've been robbed several times.' He went on to say the last thing he intended to do was echo the 'terrible pattern of people calling the authorities regarding people of color for no other reason than their race' and apologized to Michel for making him feel 'unfairly targeted due to his race.'"
