Groton, Mass — The man behind the iconic hits that dominated your radio in the 80's Centerfold, Love Stinks, Freeze Frame and others is dead at 71.

Born John Warren Geils Jr., the guitarist was found dead in his Groton, Massachusetts, home. Groton police said officers responded to Geils home around 4 p.m. Tuesday for a well-being check and found him unresponsive. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

"A preliminary investigation indicates that Geils died of natural causes," according to a police statement.

According to Billboard magazine, Geils formed 'The J. Geils Band' in 1967 with Danny Klein, Magic Dick Salwitz, Stephen Jo Bladd and Peter Wolf while studying engineering at Worcester Polytechnic Institute. They released 11 albums before breaking up in 1985.

The J.Geil Band had 10 top 40-charting hits, their biggest single, "Centerfold," spent six weeks at No. 1.
