WhatsApp notifies hundreds of users who installed a fake app that was actually government spyware

Italian spyware company SIO has been connected to a group of malicious Android apps that imitate popular services like WhatsApp to steal private data.

A security researcher shared three Android apps with TechCrunch that were linked to SIO’s surveillance tools.

These apps were designed to trick users into providing sensitive information while appearing to be legitimate services.

The discovery raises concerns about the potential misuse of surveillance tools by government agencies and the need for increased security measures to protect user data.
