Man who spray painted anti-racism messages on stop signs arrested in Central Florida

Orlando, FL — A man who spray painted ‘I can’t breathe’ and “racism” on 100 stop signs faces a criminal mischief charge, according to the Port Orange Police Department.

32-year-old Zachary Kato said officers could lock him up “and throw away the key” as he was arrested from his home on Saturday.

An arrest report shows the vandalism resulted in $12,500 worth of damages. Surveillance video reportedly shows Kato spraying the stop signs.

Officers discovered a receipt for spray paint, stencils and other evidence at Kato’s home.

Records show Kato became angry as officers continued searching the home.

“You can lock me up and throw away the key. (Expletive) racism, (expletive) white power. I’ll scream it ‘til the day I die. I want to see a judge and jury tell me that speaking out against (expletive) racism is wrong. (Expletive) that (expletive). I don’t give a (expletive) what happens,” Kato said.

According to Volusia court records, Kato is not a stranger to law enforcement.

Since 2005, he’s faced a number of different charges including multiple DUIs, highway racing, possession of marijuana and a third degree felony of domestic battery by strangulation.

For the new spray painting arrest, Kato paid a $2,500 bond and was released from Volusia County Jail.
