Tallahassee, Fla. — The head of Florida’s Division of Emergency Management and the state’s top official overseeing COVID-19 response is leaving office to spend more time with his family.
Jared Moskowitz, who led the Division of Emergency Management for the past two years, said he’s tired of being away from his wife and two children, who live in Broward County while he spends most of his time hundreds of miles away in Tallahassee.
Moskowitz told the USA Today Network’s Florida Capitol Bureau that his departure won’t be imminent, and that it would be a gradual transition.
Gov. Ron DeSantis said Monday during a news conference that Moskowitz has worked “incredibly hard” and done a “fantastic job.”
I am reminded on the third anniversary of the @MSDHighSchool school shooting in my hometown, along with this pandemic that tomorrow is not guaranteed. @fred_guttenberg. With 15 years in public office, time to hit the pause button to be with my family. I’ll be back. https://t.co/oUdpaAoj22

DeSantis said Kevin Guthrie, the deputy director of Florida’s Division of Emergency Management, will take over for Moskowitz.

Ok there's more. @JaredEMoskowitz is an incredible leader who arguably took on and sacrificed more than any single government official in FL during COVID and at great personal cost. His public service will be missed, but we haven't seen the last of him. Thank you, Jared! #sayfie https://t.co/NeygoCbY1u
