Hurricane Ian: Curfews to take effect in some Central Florida counties

VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. — Residents in some Central Florida counties will be under a curfew on Wednesday and Thursday over safety concerns from Hurricane Ian.

Osceola County:

A curfew has been enacted in the city of Kissimmee from 9 p.m. Thursday until 6 a.m. Friday because of major flooding in the city.

It does not apply to essential personnel and people traveling to and from work.

Flagler County:

A countywide curfew will go into effect at 8 p.m. Wednesday in Flagler County.

Flagler County officials the curfew is for the entire county though the evacuation order includes:

- Zone A, the barrier island from Flagler Beach to Marineland.

- Low-lying areas in Zone B, including the Bulowville neighborhoods east of John Anderson Highway and the Palm Drive and Lambert Avenue neighborhoods.

- Non-elevated homes in the low-lying areas of our Zone F, which is the area surrounding and near Crescent Lake and Dead Lake to include Daytona North are also in the evacuation order.

Officials said the curfew does not apply to the following: law enforcement personnel; federal, state, and local firefighting, emergency medical and emergency management personnel; county employees detailed to work on the emergency, Salvation Army and Red Cross personnel and volunteers; National Guard personnel; electric utility personnel; water and wastewater utility personnel; communications utility personnel; and individuals involved in medical emergencies.

The Flagler County curfew will be in effect daily from 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. until further notice.

Volusia County:

Thursday update:

The curfew for incorporated and unincorporated Volusia County residents has been extended for the safety and protection of life and property and is in effect from 10 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 29 until 7 a.m. Friday, Sept. 30.

Sheriff Mike Chitwood made his message clear on social media, letting the public know that all residents must be indoors by 8 p.m. on both days.

The curfew lasts until 7 a.m. the next day.

Chitwood also urged residents to “Lock up!” during the storm, noting that “burglars love power outages.”

Meantime, at a storm briefing Wednesday morning, Volusia County Emergency Management officials said that residents should expect widespread flooding since Hurricane Ian could dump one to two feet of rain on some areas.

They also said that along the coast, tides could run 1-3 feet above normal on Wednesday and Thursday.

Orange County:

While Orange County is seeing major impacts from Hurricane Ian, The City of Winter Park tweeted that it is issuing a curfew due to extensive flooding and tree debris.

This curfew will be in effect until 5 p.m. today and could be extended pending conditions of the roads.

Seminole County:

Brevard County:
