Florida drivers could see new ‘Save the Bees’  tag; still no ‘Orlando United’ tag

Honeybee

Tallahassee, Fla. — The Legislature is considering several new specialty license plates, including ones promoting honeybees.

For an extra 25-dollars a year, you can get a plate that reads "Save the Bees". According to the Florida State Beekeepers Association the money raised from the plates will help pay for it's research at the state's new honeybee lab in Gainesville. The funds also will go towards trying to spark interest in beekeeping.

One of the sponsors of the bill for the bees plate is newly elected Rep. Melony Bell of Fort Meade, whose husband is a commercial beekeeper.

A few months ago, we reported that the 'One Pulse Foundation' and state rep Linda Stewart, proposed the new "Orlando United" plate. Proceeds from the sale of that plate would go towards mental health counseling for survivors of the Pulse nightclub shooting in Orlando, which killed 49 people in 2016.

With approval from lawmakers, the state must pre-sell at least 1,000 plates, before they would become available to drivers on Florida's highways.

The Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles said it costs the state about $10,000 to set up printing for each new design.
