Cruise lines may cancel stops in San Juan after port privatization

San Juan, Puerto Rico — Reports from San Juan, Puerto Rico say Royal Caribbean is cancelling visits after the Governor moved to privatize the port.

Telemundo PR reports that the cruise line confirmed three ships, Symphony of the Seas, Allure of the Seas, and Oasis of the Seas would not visit the port in the  2020-21 season.
The Oasis of the Seas calls Port Canaveral it's home port.

However, Cruisehive.com reports that no itinerary's have been changed thus far, and there is a move by lawmakers to urge the Governor to reverse her decision.

Governer Wanda Vazquez believes privatization is needed to fund needed repairs and upgrades to the dock that adds up to  $250 million.

The hope is that improvements will attract more cruises in the future.

If the decision stands Royal Caribbean and some smaller lines who depart from San Juan are expected to cancel at least 90 visits which adds up to 360,000 fewer tourists and an economic impact of $44 million to the area.
