VIDEO: Divers rescue humpback whale trapped in commercial fishing net

A 39-foot humpback whale was trapped in an illegal fishing net off the Mediterranean Sea island of Mallorca when Spanish divers came to the rescue.

The whale was spotted by a ship three miles off the coast, which prompted Palma de Mallorca’s Aquarium marine rescue to get into action.

When the divers reached the whale, they found it was so entangled that it couldn’t even open its mouth.

“We kept cutting and cutting and she kind of gave a little wiggle to get herself out of it,” one of the divers said, adding that the mammal then stayed for a bit to regain its strength in the company of the four divers, and even gave what looked like “a little thank you sign” before swimming off.
