CHAPIN, S.C. — A South Carolina town council seat is supposed to be filled in September. But it will take a write-in candidate to win the post.
Friday’s noon deadline for a special election in Chapin to qualify for an open seat passed without any candidates filing to place their names on the ballot, The State of Columbia reported.
The election was called for Sept. 13 when council member Kay Hollis decided to step down from the five-person governing body, according to the newspaper.

However, no candidates filed in time with the Lexington County Election Commission, The State reported.
Elections director Lenice Shoemaker told the newspaper that the election will proceed without any listed candidates, and that there will be a write-in option for voters.
Shoemaker released a statement on July 6 stating that Hollis had resigned her seat, WLTX-TV reported. Hollis wrote a letter of resignation on June 19, according to the television station.
Chapin has a population of about 1,800 and is located 24 miles northwest of Columbia, according to The Associated Press.
