Scientists suggest 4th traffic light color for self-driving cars

Researchers from North Carolina State are trying to make traffic easier for self-driving cars. Scientists propose adding a fourth color to traffic lights: white. White light signals that a car should simply follow the car in front of them, and both humans and autonomous vehicles could use this signal.

Scientists say this could allow for more efficient traffic flow through intersections. “Granting some of the traffic flow control to the AVs is a relatively new idea, called the mobile control paradigm,” Professor Ali Hajbabaie said.

A series of calculations demonstrated that this approach could improve travel time and reduce fuel consumption. (Study Finds)
