While rats are no stranger to New York City, city officials are attempting to find solutions that curb the “relentless rat population” that continues to climb.
After New York City Sanitation Department reported that residents complaining about rats were up by 71% between October 2022 and October of this year, the mayor’s office announced their plans to hire a “director of rodent mitigation.”
The new hire will earn between $120,000 and $170,000 and help keep rat populations in check.
The push to crack down on rising rodent rates has led to restrictions on when New Yorkers can curb their trash bags and even the creation of an anti-rat t-shirt that quotes sentiments from a press conference held by New York City’s Sanitation Commissioner.
The t-shirt reads: “The rats don’t run this city. We do.”
