Florida's alligator hunting season opened last week and one man has quite a story to tell about his hunt..
Billy Moody was with two friends hunting in Lake George in the Ocala National Forest. The trio were trolling around Juniper Run when they spotted a large alligator near a sand bar.
Moody says they followed the gator for about a half hour before casting out with a salt water surf rod and reel and treble hook.
"One thing led to another and we ended up hooking him 30-40 feet away from the boat, just blind casting into the water," said Moody. The gator bit the hook and they followed the animal for another 20-30 minutes before setting a second hook.
Moody says they killed the gator with a bang stick.
Once they got the beast to shore, Moody says they measured the alligator at 13 feet, 4 inches long. Believe it or not, that is still about a foot short of the Florida state record.
Moody says he is having the alligator processed and plans to keep the meat for himself.
