Beachgoers at Panama City Beach were left astonished after a hammerhead shark gave birth to a litter of pups before their eyes at the water's edge.
According to the Daily Mail, a crowd had gathered on the beach after a fisherman hauled the five foot shark from the water and dragged it towards the sand. As the creature thrashed around in the shallow water, onlookers spotted the tiny hammerhead pups wriggling in the sea.
Despite repeated attempts to guide the hammerhead back into deeper water, she kept swimming towards the shore.
After giving birth, onlookers tried to coax the shark back into deeper waters, but the shark died around 3pm Sunday.
According to International Science Times, Hammerhead shark pups are very independent and swim away from their mothers as soon as they are born. Further nourishment from the mother is not necessary and hammerhead pups do not have predators in shallow waters.
Hammerhead sharks are a smaller species and are considered largely harmless to humans. However, a hammerhead is known to attack when provoked.http://youtu.be/G-YK86n7ofo
