Upgrades are coming to air traffic control at Orlando International Airport

ORLANDO, Fla - Major changes are coming air traffic control at Orlando International Airport that could shorten flight times and prevent delays.

The FAA is in the middle of upgrading the entire aviation system — nationwide, from flight patterns to technology improvements.

FAA’s Southern region administrator, Michael O'Harra, says these changes likely won’t go into place for at least two years but they could create some jet-engine noise in new places.

“There can be changes in altitude, there potentially could be changes in the concentration of the routes airplanes fly,” O’Harra said.

That's why the FAA is urging the public to come to a series of informational meetings around Orlando next week.

Experts will be there to explain the roll-out of its Next Generation Air Transportation System, or NextGen, which moves away from traditional radar tracking.

FAA public sessions:

-April 15th, 6 to 9 p.m. at Lake Nona High School, 12500 Narcoossee Road 

-April 16th, 6 to 9 p.m. at Orlando Executive Airport, 365 Rickenbacker Dr.  

April 17th, 6 to 9 p.m. at Florida Hotel and Conference Center, 1500 Sand Lake Road

April 18th, 6 to 9 p.m. at Winter Park Community Center, 721 W. New England Ave.
