UL labs have, for the first time, tested the wildly popular so-called 'hoverboards.'

In a controlled lab setting, the board burst into flames.

The flaming, popping hoverboard is said to be very much like what users have repeatedly experienced in the real world.

The many brands of 'hoverboards' were very popular as Christmas gifts last year.

But the random reports of fires has given a lot of users reason for caution.

One of the biggest retails in the US, Amazon, even offered full refunds for anyone who bought from them.

The US Consumer Product Safety Commission has given these guidelines for safe use:

For those determined to use their hoverboards, the CPSC encourages people to use extreme caution. The CPSC has made the following recommendations:

  • Have a working fire extinguisher nearby when using or charging the devices.
  • Charge the hoverboard away from other combustible items.
  • Always wear protective gear when riding a hoverboard.
  • Never use a hoverboard on or near a road.
