The University of Central Florida has reinstated activities for fraternities and sororities on campus following a ban related to the ‘misuse’ of alcohol and hazing among the Greek community.
UCF officials say students were informed of the decision after a week of presentations where issues such as underage drinking, accountability and hazing prevention were addressed.
Officials say 41 chapters were reinstated.
Students at UCF told WFTV they're glad to have Greek life back.
"It's part of college, it's part of the culture and part of who we are," student Brianne Keil said.
The university initially banned all Greek-life activities on February 21 after a Facebook photo surfaced showing three Sigma Chi pledges participating in hazing activities. One of the pledges was being given a drink while two others were seen slumped over in a trashcan.
Sigma Chi has been suspended until 2016. UCF also announced Alpha Epsilon Pi was suspended for hazing until 2014. Another fraternity, Lambda Chi Alpha also faced suspension.
Clay Coleman, UCF's director of Fraternity and Sorority Life, says the university remains focused on the prevention of alcohol misuse and hazing.
"It is important that all of our chapters continue to engage their new and active members in effective educational programs related to the dangers associated with alcohol misuse and hazing," Coleman said. "We also will ensure that all of our organizations' new members are informaed of their rights prior to and during the new member process."
During the suspension, chapters were still allowed to hold alcohol-free philanthropic events.
