MIAMI — Tropical Storm Nicholas has formed in the southwestern Gulf of Mexico, not a full day following the peak of the 2021 Atlantic Hurricane Season.

Four other disturbances, three of which are much closer to Africa than the U.S., are being given low-to-medium chances of cyclone formation in the next five days; Disturbance 5, closer to Florida than either Tropical Storm Nicholas or any other system of note, has a 50% chance of going tropical by Friday, according to the NHC.

Starting Monday, Tropical Storm Nicholas is expected to bring tropical storm conditions to the northeastern coast of Mexico and potentially all of the Texas coast, according to the National Hurricane Center.

Warnings of life-threatening storm surge on the coast of Texas “from the Mouth of the Rio Grande to High Island” are included in key messages regarding Tropical Storm Nicholas, and residents living in such areas are advised to heed the word of local officials, according to the NHC.

Heavy rain from Tropical Storm Nicholas is anticipated to arrive in Texas and Louisiana from Mexico by late Sunday, with such downpours expected to last until mid-week, according to the NHC.
