September is Prostate Cancer Awareness Month and in honor of the cancer fight, Orange County Mayor Jerry Demings gave a personal update on his battle.

The mayor announced his diagnosis with the cancer back in June during the annual ‘State of the County’ address held at the Orange County Convention Center. Towards the end of that address, the gubernatorial hopeful addressed the crowd and officially annouced the diagnosis, at the same time pausing his push for the democratic nomination.

In Demings statement, released on Tuesday, he gave an update on his status including his choice to have his prostate removed. The mayor saying, “After talking with my doctors and learning about my treatment options, I chose to undergo surgery to remove my prostate.” Adding that he was “grateful for the outstanding medical care” that he received.
Demings adds that if he could highlight one lesson from this experience, “early detection matters.”
According to the CDC, aside from non-melanoma skin cancer, prostate cancer is the most common cancer among men in the United States. And the American Cancer Society estimates about 333,830 new cases of prostate cancer in 2026.
