An Orlando man is now in police custody after an officer involved shooting at the Walmart on John Young Pkwy and Princeton Street.
The shooting was at the same Walmart where Lt. Debra Clayton was shot and killed last month. For Orlando Police Chief John Mina, it was a painful reminder.
"The memory of Debra and having to come here again for an officer-involved shooting, that's one of the first things my staff and I talked about. It kind of brings up those sad memories,” Mina said.
The suspect randomly approached people in the Walmart parking lot and opened fire with a BB gun. Two people were shot at, with at least one of them suffering only minor injuries. Mina said the BB gun had a long barrel and looked realistic.
When police arrived to the scene the suspect pointed his gun at the police and opened fire. An officer returned fire and injured the suspect who was taken to the hospital to be treated for his injuries. His condition isn’t known at this time.
The officer involved in the shooting will be on paid leave administrative leave as the Florida Department of Law Enforcement conducts an investigation.
