CASSELBERRY, Fla. - A Casselberry family sprang into action early Sunday when it awoke to smoke in its apartment.

A fire destroyed a unit at the Sandpiper apartments on North Oxford Boulevard.

Austin Goosbuy watched his home of three years -- and everything in it -- go up in flames. He didn’t have time to grab a jacket, but he saved those who are most important to him: his two children.

“We didn’t realize how thick the smoke was until we went upstairs to wake the kids up. And then it got hard to breathe,” he said. “[We] saw the real black smoke. And at that point, it was panic mode.”

The family escaped its home, which was engulfed in flames that reached nearly 20 feet high.

“When I came around to the front of the building, I saw the carpet was on fire,” Goosbuy said. “It was really out of hand at that point.”

The couple said it alerted residents in neighboring units.

Firefighters said two shattered windows allowed oxygen to flow into the building, which only further fueled the fire.

Both the Seminole County Fire Rescue and the Longwood Fire Department battled the blaze.
