The family of a student who was shot at West Orange High School in 2013 wants the school district to pay up.
Ja'Roderick Smith's lawyer has sent a letter to Orange County Public Schools demanding $300,000 for Smith and his family, the maximum amount allowed by law.
A demand letter was sent to school district leaders and asks for $200,000 for the now 16-year-old's injuries and $100,000 for his mother, Jamiyah Ford.
Attorney Gary Siplin said the school district hasn't responded to their efforts to settle.
"There's no benefit for them to drag this out," said WFTV legal analyst Bill Sheaffer.
If the district doesn't settle, Sheaffer said it could lead to a lengthy and expensive court battle.
"The clock is ticking for the school board to do the right thing or cost taxpayers literally tens of thousands of dollars in legal fees," said Sheaffer.
Channel 9 was unable to reach Orange County school officials about the family's attempt to settle the case.
The family said Smith continues to undergo physical therapy and psychological counseling following the shooting.
In September, the convicted gunman, J'Morian Bell, pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 25 years in prison.
