ORLANDO, Fla. — Dexter A. Rentz Jr., an 18-year-old senior varsity football player for the Ocoee Knights who signed with the University of Louisville Cardinals in December, was killed late Saturday night in an Orlando-area shooting that left three others injured.

Police responded to shots fired in the Carver Shores neighborhood near MetroWest at 11:19 p.m., finding a car parked on Elese St. between Lanette St. and Deerock drive with shattered windows and four occupants with gunshot wounds.

A different vehicle drove away from the scene when police arrived; the driver was arrested, but detectives believe that the individual was not involved.

Where Rentz’s twitter feed was once filled with congratulations from his friends and family, there are now heartfelt goodbyes and tributes to his life.

Scott Satterfield, head football coach at the University of Louisville, reacted to Rentz’s death Sunday morning:

“We are deeply saddened to hear about the passing of Dexter Rentz.

He was a great young man who had a contagious personality, and was able to light up a room with his smile,” Satterfield said.

“He was a great kid to be around and he will be missed.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to the Rentz family during this extremely difficult time.”

Rentz played a wide range of positions for the Ocoee Knights varsity football team, specialized in serving as corner back and slot receiver, and wore the number two on his jersey.

According to a detailed report from Orlando Sentinel high school and local sports reporter J.C. Carnahan, Rentz "chose Louisville over scholarship offers from 22 other Football Bowl Subdivision programs."

Carnahan’s report goes on to point out that after signing for the University of Louisville Cardinals football team on December 18, Rentz would have gone to Kentucky for a campus visit on May 10, just two weeks from now, to later enroll in June.

Orlando Police stress that the investigation is ongoing, as those responsible have not been found at the time of this report.
