Controversy is brewing in Lake County over the school board's expected decision to ban the creation of a gay club at a Leesburg Middle School.
For months 14 year Bayli Silberstein has tried to form a Gay Straight Alliance at Carver Middle, due to what she calls intense bullying.
"A couple of my close friends encounter it almost every day," said Silberstein.
But Lake County School Board member Todd Howard tells WDBO these types of clubs should be reserved for high school.
"From a board members standpoint, I’m not sure why we need to be discussing whether you are a gay or a lesbian in middle school," said Howard.
It's something Baylor Johnson with the American Civil Liberties Union calls shocking and shameful.
"There is a cultural of discrimination at Lake County Schools that includes the administration," says Johnson.
The board's expected rejection may soon lead to a lawsuit by the ACLU.
