Attorney Cheney Mason stopped by NBC’s “Today” show Monday morning and gave his two-cents about the Casey Anthony trial.
Mason served on Casey’s Defense team and had a lot to say about the trial. Casey Anthony was acquitted of murdering her 2-year-old daughter, Caylee Marie Anthony, but was found guilty on four accounts of lying to law enforcement.
Host Savannah Guthrie asked Mason if he believed Casey was innocent, not just not-guilty jurors decided.
“I do believe her story. I believed it from the first time I met her, it was several weeks before I was formally on the team…she did not kill her child.” Mason said.
Mason was asked if Casey Anthony’s relationship with her parents is beyond restore. Mason said he doesn’t think any relationship is ever beyond repair, but considering the odds, they’re pretty slim.
“She might have a relationship in the future with her brother at some point, I don’t know when or how, I think with the parents, that’s pretty well burned,” he said.
The defense team asked Judge Belvin Perry in the middle of the trial to stop, to see if Casey was competent to continue with the trial.
“She’s tough.” Mason said. “But we needed to find out if she was okay.” Mason was asked if he thought Casey was mentally ill and he responded “no, she is not.”
Guthrie also asked Mason if he believed Casey should flee the country.
“No, it’s as much her country as anybody else’s,” Mason said. “She just needs to have some time, counseling and be reintroduced to society.”
Later in the interview, an obscene picture of Mason flicking the “bird” at the media came up. Mason stated his frustration with media coverage of the trial was not directed towards the news media in general. He said his gesture was directed towards a specific person.
“There was one particular stalker that had been stalking our defense team morning, noon, and night every day of the trial yelling obscenities and threatening and trying to embarrass and expose Mr. Baez and myself, and others…and that little non-human person deserved what he got,” Mason said.
