CDC: Mumps cases at a 10-year high, colleges hit hard

Mumps: Not for Kids Anymore (MumpsAwareness)

It has been a quite a while since we have done a story about the Mumps, but according to the CDC, the Centers for Disease Control, Mumps cases are on the rise.

Mumps are at a 10 year high in the country with 45 states, including Florida reporting over 4,000 cases. That is more than double the past two years combined.

According to the CDC, colleges and universities seem to be the hardest hit by the contagious virus.

A university in Missouri issued a press release stating, "Most of the students are reporting associations with friends who have mumps, Greek organizations, or interactions in local bars."  The university has asked student groups to cancel non-mandatory social events as the semester nears an end.

Mumps still remains a rare disease thanks to the vaccine. Normally, children recieve two doses of vaccine, but the school is asking students to get a third measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine in order to nip it in the bud.
