After backlash, Disney quietly pulls 'sexy' Merida and returns original character

Disney has pulled a sexily made-over version of Princess Merida, the heroine from the movie Brave, from its Disney Princesses website after there was a strong backlash against the revamped character.

The original version of Merida is now on the site instead.

The made-over Merida, originally intended to be part of a celebration for her "coronation ceremony" last week at Walt Disney World, saw her with a slimmer figure, a fuller bust, less-wild curly hair and a made-up face.

The backlash included a petition on Change.org, which gained more than 200,000 signatures, calling for the original Merida to be brought back.

It said, "Merida is an empowering role model who speaks to girls' capacity to be change agents in the world rather than just trophies to be admired."

Brave's director even spoke out, telling the Marin Independent Journal that Merida's redesign was, quote, "a blatantly sexist marketing move based on money."

Although the revamped Merida was pulled from its website, Disney has yet to release any statement on the matter.
