Florida was hit hard by the pandemic, with tourism taking the biggest punch creating a domino effect on the state’s unemployment numbers.
Patch.com reports that “the leisure and tourism industry lost 254,400 jobs in 2020. “
That’s 20.3 percent of the total jobs available in those industries.
Walt Disney World Parks and Resorts reported the largest number of lay-offs with 18,015 and another 4,000 are expected at the beginning of this year.
The company employs workers worldwide and 28,000 jobs have been reported to be lost with most of those affected in the U.S., keep in mind the parks in California have not reopened yet.
SeaWorld and Universal Resorts were also hit hard with thousands of layoffs each. Universal City Development Partners of Orlando, which according to Bloomberg, owns and operates theme parks, laid off more than 5,000 employees.
Hotels were next in line for the largest numbers, with Hilton reporting 6,726 fewer jobs, and Hyatt nearing 3,000.
Related industries like laundry service and consulting were part of the domino effect.
Airports and related industries are also included in the sad equation that totaled thousands of pink slips.
On the list are automotive rental businesses, airline baggage services, and the airlines themselves; Southwest Airlines reported 870 lay-offs.
Movie theaters, universities, developers, and retail outlets also contributed to Florida’s high unemployment.
Despite the improved numbers nationwide, in late December, Florida still sent unemployment checks to more than 2 million residents.
The U.S. Department of Labor requires businesses to submit an advance notice, or WARN notice, before a mass lay-off.
