Dad dies in brawl at boy’s basketball game

A Vermont man is dead following a fight at a middle school basketball game.

Alburgh resident Russell Giroux, 60, died Tuesday after he was taken to a nearby hospital, according to Vermont State Police. His cause of death is pending the results of an autopsy, police say.

Although police haven’t released details of the brawl, video taken by a witness shows several people on the Alburgh Community Education Center basketball court, throwing punches and tackling each other. “Our immediate goal is to remind and educate our students and families that our school culture is one of family, community, and kindness,” reads a statement issued by the Grand Isle Supervisory Union School District. “We need our students and community to commit to the positive culture that our school community expects and deserves.”
