- Tropical Depression - A tropical cyclone with max. sustained winds of 38 mph or less.
- Tropical Storm - A tropical cyclone with max. sustained winds of 39 to 73 mph.
- Hurricane - a tropical cyclone with max. sustained winds of 74 mph or higher.
- Major Hurricane - a tropical cyclone with max. sustained winds of 111 mph or higher, corresponding to a Category 3, 4 or 5 on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale.
Watch vs. Warning Know The Difference:
- Hurricane Watch -Hurricane conditions are a threat within 48 hours. Review your hurricane plans. Get ready to act if a warning is issued, and stay informed.
- Hurricane Warning - Hurricane conditions are expected within 36 hours. Complete your storm preparations and leave the area if directed to do so by authorities.
