ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. — Florida Highway Patrol troopers are investigating a deadly crash that happened Sunday morning in Orange County.
A 44-year-old Lakeland woman died and a 9-year-old girl was seriously injured when their car crashed into a concrete barrier and caught fire on Interstate 4 around 7:45 a.m.
The fatal crash occurred at the I-4 eastbound exit ramp to Daryl Carter Parkway at mile marker 70.
The driver was transported to Orlando Regional Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
The 9-year-old passenger was taken to Arnold Palmer Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Investigators said the passenger was wearing a seat belt, while the driver was not.
According to a Florida Highway Patrol press release, the 2017 Honda Accord was traveling eastbound on I-4 approaching the exit ramp at mile marker 70 when the driver experienced a possible medical episode.
The car traveled onto the grass median separating the exit ramp from the main travel lanes, continued through the intersection of Daryl Carter Parkway and struck a curb.
The vehicle then collided with a concrete traffic barrier on the north shoulder of Daryl Carter Parkway at the eastbound entrance ramp before catching fire.
Investigators believe the same vehicle was involved in a separate crash shortly before the fatal collision.
That incident occurred at mile marker 69 on I-4 and involved a 2019 Volkswagen Tiguan, with no injuries reported.
Both crashes remain under investigation.
