TITUSVILLE, Fla. — Police in Titusville are investigating an officer-involved shooting that happened late Tuesday night.
7:40 a.m. update:
A 42-year-old Titusville man was shot by a police officer during a well-being check Tuesday night after answering the door armed with a long gun, according to the Titusville Police Department.
Police said officers responded to a residence in the 1100 block of Cheney Highway around 11 p.m. after receiving a report of an individual, identified as Timmy Eady, making concerning statements.
When officers attempted to make contact at the front door, Eady answered while armed with a long gun, according to a police news release.
During the encounter, one officer fired a single round, striking Eady in the shoulder area, police said.
Following the shooting, Eady retreated inside the residence and barricaded himself.
Officers reestablished communication with him, and he eventually surrendered peacefully without further incident, according to police.
Officers then immediately began lifesaving efforts at the scene.
Eady sustained one gunshot wound and was taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, police said.
Eady was medically cleared at the hospital and taken to the Brevard County jail, where he was being held with no bond.
According to the police department, Eady faces two counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and one count of resisting an officer with violence.
The Brevard County Sheriff’s Office is conducting an independent investigation into the officer-involved shooting.
“The Titusville Police Department is committed to transparency during these critical incidents,” Interim Chief Wright said in the release. “We understand the importance of quick and accurate information to our community, and we will provide updates as soon as they become available.”
The police department said additional information will be provided as it becomes available.
