DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — A 14-year-old Mainland High School student was arrested Friday after investigators linked him to social media posts threatening school shootings at two Daytona Beach schools, authorities said.
According to the Volusia Sheriff’s Office, the threats were posted on Snapchat and claimed shootings would occur at Seabreeze High School and Mainland High School.
The sheriff’s office said members of its Domestic Security Unit and School Resource Unit assisted the Daytona Beach Police Department in the investigation. Detectives worked with Snapchat and Apple to quickly identify the suspect as Xavier Lewis, 14.
Investigators said Lewis had been suspended from Mainland High School the previous day for making threatening statements on campus.
Deputies located Lewis at his home in Holly Hill, took him into custody and turned him over to Daytona Beach police.
Lewis faces two counts of making written threats to kill and one count of unlawful use of a two-way communication device, according to authorities.
The investigation remains ongoing.
