The data shows expenses increased by 4.1 percent from the previous year.

Key milestones such as homeownership, raising children, and retirement have seen significant cost hikes.

The cost of owning and maintaining a home is the largest expense at $1.28 million, followed by the cost of two new cars and retirement, each totaling nearly $1.21 million over a lifetime.

Raising two kids and putting them through college has seen a 9% increase in cost, jumping from $876,000 in 2025 to $954,000 today due to pricier childcare and in-state higher education tuition.

Healthcare costs have slightly decreased in 2026, with lifetime costs estimated at $413,000, down from $414,000 in 2025.

Despite this, a Gallup poll shows that a majority of Americans still value and strive for the American Dream, with financial security and homeownership being key components for many.
