After a recent spike in COVID-19 cases in Florida, several counties are closing beaches for Independence Day weekend 2020.
Miami-Dade, Palm Beach and Broward counties have all decided to close their beaches ahead of the holiday weekend. Beaches in the Miami area will remain closed until July 17.
Following their decisions over the weekend, Monroe County decided on Monday to close beaches beginning on Thursday night. Monroe is home of the Florida Keys, one of the state's most popular tourist attractions.
In Central Florida, Volusia and Brevard counties have not made any plans to close beaches for the weekend. Volusia beaches were closed earlier this year until the beginning of May for all non-exercise related activity.
