Sheriff Mike Chitwood joins Orlando’s Evening News after hit-and-run bicycle crash

Orlando, Fla. — A day after Volusia Sheriff Mike Chitwood was hit by a distracted 20-year-old driver while bicycling near his home, Chitwood tells Orlando’s Evening News he’s still in pain.

“Well, you know, about 24 hours later I feel like I’ve been hit by a car” Chitwood quipped.

Despite ten stitches in his back, road rash, a broken fibula bone and a headache, Sheriff Chitwood was back to work the next day.

On Thursday afternoon, Chitwood was riding on Town West Blvd. in Port Orange when a burgundy side mirror “impaled” his lower back.

The driver who hit him didn’t stop.

A Waste-Pro truck not far behind witnessed the hit-and-run and captured the incident on video.

About 11 hours later, Paige Bergman was arrested at her home in Deltona.
