According to a newly released memo, the Florida Department of Transportation is ordering the removal of all automated license plate readers from state-maintained roads.

It shows that FDOT is revoking general-use permits for the devices used by local law enforcement agencies within the right-of-way of roads on the State Highway System.

The department said the memo is intended to notify local agencies about the change in policy regarding the placement and use of automated license plate recognition systems.

All affected license plate readers must be removed within 30 days.

FDOT said it will remove any remaining devices subject to the memo after that deadline.

This comes after Volusia County Sheriff Mike Chitwood announced Monday that license plate readers will be shut down immediately across that county.

Chitwood said the decision follows controversy over Flock cameras, including concerns about who can access the data and how it is stored.

He noted that the cameras have helped solve violent crimes, locate missing people, save lives, and recover stolen property.

However, Chitwood said recent orders and statements from Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis and the Department of Transportation have made the technology “no longer workable” in the state.
