New area code '689' to take effect in Central Florida June 4th

Central Florida — As Bob Dylan used to say, "The Times They Are a-Changin'". So is the area code for the majority of Central Florida.

The Florida Public Service Commission says that starting June 4th, 2019, new phone numbers with the area code "689" will be given out, which will replace the "407" area code that many of you probably already have.

The FPSC says that the 407 code, which has been around since the 1980’s, has been exhausted as long as possible and that all available numbers are expected to be assigned within the year.

However, this is no reason to panic. They say if you already have a 407 number, then you are safe. Your number will not change. Only people who apply for new phone numbers in Central Florida will be given this new 689 code.

Right now, the 407 code serves Orange, Osceola, Seminole and sections of Lake and Volusia counties. This new 689 code will also apply to those same regions.
