Major U.S. airlines and industry analysts warn that travelers may continue to face high airfares even if oil and jet fuel prices decrease.

Fluctuations in jet fuel prices, which have surged due to the Iran war, make it challenging for airlines to plan ahead and lower ticket prices.

Brett House, an economist at Columbia Business School, highlights the impact of fuel price volatility on airlines’ pricing strategies, stating, “It’s a very difficult environment for airlines to operate in.”

Despite a drop in jet fuel prices from a peak in April to a wartime low in June, average airfares have remained elevated.

Airlines are adjusting schedules and prices for the remainder of the year, with airfares already 23% higher than last year, and travelers may not see relief in the near future.
