Russell won in a landslide victory, garnering almost 70% of the vote. The race was defined partially by opposing ideas about Amendment 3, which did pass. The two candidates also had different ideas about where county funding would be best used.

Messina supported the amendment, claiming that it would lower property taxes for Orange County voters who own a home. Conversely, Russell opposed the legislation, on the grounds that it would not benefit renters, who make up the majority of the county’s residents.
