ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. — A Florida Department of Law Enforcement investigation is underway after a Florida Highway Patrol trooper shot a suspect Friday night, Oct. 2, following a hit-and-run crash in Orange County. State authorities said the shooting occurred after the suspect fled the crash scene on foot and resisted arrest.

The incident began at approximately 9:24 p.m. on Lakeville Road when a trooper responded to reports of a hit-and-run crash. Upon locating the suspect nearby, the trooper attempted to make contact before the encounter escalated.

During the encounter, the suspect refused to comply with the officer’s instructions, leading the trooper to deploy a taser multiple times. State police said the suspect continued to resist arrest despite the taser deployments, resulting in the trooper firing his weapon and striking the suspect.

Following the shooting, the suspect was arrested and transported to a local hospital for medical treatment. The trooper was not injured in the incident.

FDLE is conducting a use-of-force investigation into the shooting, which state officials describe as standard protocol for shootings involving law enforcement officers.
