Colorado State University releases 2019 Atlantic Hurricane Season forecast

Georgia prepares for Hurricane Michael October 10, 2018 Atlanta: Evening Center Director, Jeff Morrison talks with staff after the morning shift change. The Georgia Emergency Management and Homeland Security Agency was in over-drive Wednesday morning, Oct. 10, 2018 after activating its special operations center in Atlanta on Tuesday. The center is in ìLevel 1î operations, its highest level, and plans to stay that way for the foreseeable future, said Catherine Howden, the agencyís chief of staff. The agency is working with myriad agencies, including the Georgia Department of Transportation, FEMA and various county and city governments, to coordinate a response.† In preparation for the arrival of the storm Wednesday morning, the Georgia Department of Transportation deployed 400 workers to southwest Georgia to aid storm recovery efforts. The agency sent another 400 workers to southeastern Georgia. But Howden said her agency, commonly known as GEMA, has been watching Michael since it was but a blip on the radar, beginning to churn toward the U.S. days ago. The run-up has been rapid and tense.†ìIt is a very fast moving storm, but this is something we have faced multiple times,î Howden said. ìWeíre working as a well-oiled machine with our partners.î JOHN SPINK/JSPINK@AJC.COM (JOHN SPINK / AJC)

Colorado State University released its latest Forecast of 2019 Atlantic Seasonal Hurricane Activity on Thursday, a day after AccuWeather released theirs.

Dr. Phillip Klotzbach and his team of researchers are predicting a “slightly below average” season this year.

Colorado State’s Tropical Meteorology Project is predicting a total of 13 named storms and five hurricanes.

Among those hurricanes, Klotzbach’s team is forecasting two of them will reach Category 3 strength or higher.

Like the AccuWeather's hurricane forecast, CSU is attributing the slightly below average activity to El Niño which typically causes wind shear in the Atlantic basin, which could hamper tropical cyclone development.

The 2019 Atlantic Hurricane season officially begins June 1.
