Girl, 10, still in bad shape in hospital

Police today announced they have arrested and charged Lastevie V. Howard for leaving the scene of an accident involving personal injury and for reckless driving with great bodily harm.

Howard, 40, was behind the wheel of a black SUV that struck two Citrus Elementary School children riding bicycles home from class on Jan, 20., according to police.

One of the students was thrown into Clarke Road, just south of Silver Star Road, and suffered severe head injuries.

The other student, her friend, was slightly injured.

She is unconscious and in critical condition at Arnold Palmer Hospital in Orlando. She underwent surgery to relieve brain swelling and was in the Intensive Care Unit.

Witnesses told police that the driver then fled the scene, but was convinced to return where police then confiscated his damaged vehicle.
