Volusia Beach Safety: Surfer suffers shark bites to hand and leg near New Smyrna Beach

New Smyrna Beach, Fla. — A surfer in New Smyrna Beach was bitten by a 6-foot shark, according to Volusia County Beach officials.

Lifeguards said Donald Walsh, 40, was bitten on the left hand and leg after he caught a wave, jumped off his board and landed on the shark in waist deep water.

He was treated at the scene and later at a hospital, his condition has not been update.

Walsh is the 11th shark bit victim at Volusia County beaches this year.
