Daytona Beach, Fla. — Hundreds of thousands of sandbags have been given away for free in anticipation of the arrival of Hurricane Dorian, but the Volusia County Sheriff says two men in Daytona Beach have been arrested for looting - you guessed it - sandbags!
A Sheriff sergeant spotted Thaylon A. Lewis, 43 and Joseph Colombo Jr., 45, working as a team to take the bags from a construction site.
The Sheriff’s Office says one man was loading the bags into a truck while the other acted as a lookout near Tomaka Farms Road and the Interstate 4 overpass.
Colombo was also arrested for an injunction violation for possessing a firearm.
Both men have been charged with theft during a state of emergency, which means enhanced penalties are in effect.
A Facebook post states, "Sheriff Mike Chitwood has issued several warnings that enhanced penalties are in effect during the state of emergency declared in advance of the storm, and will be pursued against anyone caught committing crimes during this period."
