A new study and poll from two Elon University research centers found that 27% of American adults are using AI language models for emotional or social interactions, leading to increased social isolation.

While users reported benefits such as accessibility to education and advancements in healthcare, concerns were raised about social isolation, trust in news media, and mental health issues.
On the plus side, 74% said education and information will be more accessible; 69% said there will be advancements in healthcare and research; 67% cited innovation; and 62% said it will create new types of careers and opportunities.
On the downside, 57% said there will be more social isolation and loneliness; 55% said there will be less trust in news or news media; 54% said it will be harder to get a job or meaningful work; and 47% said more mental problems are coming.
The study highlighted the intimate relationships users form with AI companions, with some users sharing personal struggles and seeking advice on various topics.
The findings suggest a mixed balance of benefits and challenges associated with the use of AI companions, pointing to potential future implications for society.
