Pumpkins to fly in East Lake County

SORRENTO, Fla. — Catapults were invented 400 years before Christ. These days, they make a nice launching device for pumpkins. It’s the idea behind the East Lake County Library’s 4th Annual Pumpkin Chunkin’ Contest on October 6 in Sorrento.

Teams will launch 3-5 lb. pumpkins 100 feet in the air at a target using catapults or trebuchets they built. Trophies are awarded to the team with the “Best Accuracy”, “Best Decorated Pumpkin”, "Best Costume" and "Best Decorated Structure".

Three teams will be vying for this year’s prizes, according to a library press release.
