Possible death threat at Lake Co. school

The Lake County Sheriff's Office said it was investigating a possible death threat at a middle school in Mount Dora on Thursday.

Investigators said someone found a letter about students shooting up the school.

Dismissal time at Mount Dora Middle School had many on edge Thursday.

"We have little siblings who attend this school and it's like, what's going on?  It's really scary, " said a student's sister, Jessica Ruby.

The Lake County Sheriff's Office said it is examining a threatening note written by a 13-year-old girl.

"It appeared to be a note of 'things to do,' and it indicates that someone was going to 'shoot up the school' on Friday the 13th," said Lt. John Herrell of the Lake County Sheriff's Office.

The note was found by a fellow student, folded up in a textbook, during the last class period on March 30.

The letter listed the names of several students, officer said.

"There was no indication on the note that these were intended targets or that the note was any type of hit list," said Herrell.

Instead, they were supposed to be "helpers."

Detectives talked to all of the students listed, and learned some were friends of the teen, but none knew about any plot.

Meantime, the 7th grader accused of writing the note has 'dropped out.'

"The student has withdrawn from Lake County schools," said school official, Chris Patton.

"So the parents took her out?" WFTV asked.

"That's correct," replied Patton.

"A lot of parents are upset, because we don't know if it's a rumor or not a rumor," said a parent.

The sheriff's office said if prosecutors bring charges it would be disruption of a school function, which is a misdemeanor.
