Port Richey mayor faces attempted murder charges

Port Richey Mayor Dale Massad is no stranger to trouble.

Last August he was arrested for domestic battery and spent the night in jail.

At the time, he said it was a place he didn't want to go back to.

Investigators say the former doctor, who gave up his license to practice in 1992 after a young boy died in his care, had been unlawfully treating people in his home.

But that's exactly where he ended up again this week.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement went to raid it early Thursday morning, armed with a search warrant.

When SWAT members broke down his door, Massad fired two shots at them with a hand gun.

SWAT retreated outside before eventually taking Massad into custody.

Pasco County Sheriff Chris Nocco says the mayor is lucky he's not dead.

Nocco adds that his deputies knew at the time of the raid that Massad had weapons in his home and was believed to be using drugs.

Massad, who's been Port Richey's mayor since 2015, is facing two counts of attempted murder.
