WEST MELBOURNE, Fla. — West Melbourne police are urging residents to stay off the roads as significant flooding impacts roadways across the city, leaving multiple vehicles stranded and forcing several road closures.
The West Melbourne Police Department issued an urgent warning Monday morning, advising motorists to avoid unnecessary travel as floodwaters make some streets impassable.
Police reported that the following roadways are closed because of flooding:
Minton Road northbound at Helen Street
Minton Road at U.S. 192, southbound
Officers say flooding has become widespread, with disabled vehicles reported throughout the city.
Police are warning that anyone who attempts to drive could risk getting their vehicle trapped or flooded.
Authorities are also reminding drivers never to attempt to cross flooded roadways, emphasizing the potentially life-threatening danger of driving through standing water.
Police say 911 should be reserved for life-threatening emergencies. The department is already aware of the flooded streets and is monitoring conditions.
Motorists are also being asked to use caution, allow extra time for emergency crews and find alternate routes around flooded areas.
Residents are encouraged to monitor Brevard County Emergency Management and the West Melbourne Police Department for additional updates as conditions change.
